We’re well in the month of November, and Thanksgiving is on our minds. Lots of plans and preparations are in the making with the upcoming holidays (even if only in our minds for now). And the schedule is likely to get crazy busy.
So, in this month of our Thanksgiving holiday, we want to turn our minds and hearts to what this season is really about–giving thanks to our wonderful God for His many blessings. And what better resource to guide us than Psalms?
It’s always been popular to divide the psalms into a number of categories. That’s how I was taught all the way through college, and it was a good, helpful way to learn about them. When I was first in seminary in the 1980s, I took a course on Psalms. My professor taught us about the various ways of categorizing them. Then he told us he believed all the psalms could be ultimately divided into just two categories–psalms of thanksgiving (or praise) and psalms of lament. And he gave us a list dividing them into those two groups.
We want to share some of those psalms of thanksgiving. In some psalms, we have quoted only verses that directly speak to giving thanks. In others, we have included the whole psalm. This is in no way an exhaustive list. And we encourage you to search the Scriptures for others.
We pray this will be a tool you can use to give thanks and praise to God during this Thanksgiving holiday time and all year long. You can download a PDF of these scriptures to print out here. Use it during your personal devotion time, around the dinner table with the family, or when you have your Couple Connect time–or weekly couple devotion.
A beautiful marriage is full of thanksgiving. And we pray these beautiful scriptures will help you make thanksgiving and praise a part of your everyday life.

30I will praise God’s name in song and glorify Him with thanksgiving.

2to proclaim Your love in the morning
and Your faithfulness at night,
3to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp.

I sing for joy at the works of Your hands.

give thanks to Him and praise His name.

His faithfulness continues through all generations. Psalm 95:1-7
1Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
2Let us come before Him with thanksgiving
and extol Him with music and song. 3For the LORD is the great God,
the great King above all gods.
4In His hand are the depths of the earth,
and the mountain peaks belong to Him.
5The sea is His, for He made it,
and His hands formed the dry land. 6Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
7for He is our God and we are the people of His pasture,
the flock under His care. Psalm 105:1-2
1Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name;
make known among the nations what He has done.

His love endures forever. Psalm 111
1Praise the LORD.
I will extol the LORD with all my heart
in the council of the upright and in the assembly.
2Great are the works of the LORD;
they are pondered by all who delight in them.
3Glorious and majestic are His deeds,
and His righteousness endures forever.
4He has caused His wonders to be remembered;
The Lord is gracious and compassionate.
5He provides food for those who fear Him;
He remembers His covenant forever.
6He has shown His people the power of His works,
giving them the lands of other nations.
7The works of His hands are faithful and just;
all His precepts are trustworthy.
8They are steadfast for ever and ever,
done in faithfulness and uprightness.
9He provided redemption for His people;
He ordained His covenant forever—
holy and awesome is His name. 10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;
all who follow His precepts have good understanding.
To Him belongs eternal praise. Psalm 118:21

You have become my salvation. Psalm 118:28-29

7Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving;
make music to our God on the harp. Psalm 103
1Praise the LORD, O my soul;
all my inmost being, praise His holy name.
2Praise the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all His benefits—
3who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
4who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
5who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. 6The LORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. 7He made known His ways to Moses,
His deeds to the people of Israel:
8The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
9He will not always accuse, nor will He harbor His anger forever;
10He does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.
11For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is His love for those who fear Him;
12as far as the east is from the west,
so far He has removed our transgressions from us.
13As a father has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.
14for He knows how we are formed,
He remembers that we are dust.
15As for man, his days are like grass,
he flourishes like a flower of the field;
16the wind blows over it and it is gone,
and its place remembers it no more.
17But from everlasting to everlasting
the Lord’s love is with those who fear Him,
and His righteousness with their children’s children—
18with those who keep His covenant and remember to obey His precepts.
19The LORD has established His throne in heaven,
and His kingdom rules over all. 20Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones
who do His bidding, who obey His word.
21Praise the LORD, all His heavenly hosts,
You His servants who do His will.
22Praise the LORD, all His works everywhere in His dominion.
Praise the LORD, O my soul. Psalm 145
1I will exalt you, my God the King;
I will praise Your name for ever and ever.
2Every day I will praise You and extol Your name for ever and ever.
3Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
His greatness no one can fathom.
4One generation will commend your works to another;
they will tell of Your mighty acts.
5They will speak of the glorious splendor of Your majesty,
and I will meditate on Your wonderful works,
6They will tell of the power of Your awesome works,
and I will proclaim Your great deeds.
7They will celebrate Your abundant goodness
and joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
8The LORD is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love.
9The LORD is good to all;
He has compassion on all He has made.
10All you have made will praise You, O LORD;
your saints will extol You.
11They will tell of the glory of Your kingdom
and speak of Your might,
12so that all men may know of Your mighty acts
and the glorious splendor of Your kingdom.
13Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and Your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all His promises
and loving toward all He has made.
14The LORD upholds all those who fall
and lifts up all who are bowed down.
15The eyes of all look to You,
And You give them their food at the proper time.
16You open Your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.
17The LORD is righteous in all His ways
and loving toward all He has made.
18The LORD is near to all who call on Him,
to all who call on Him in truth.
19He fulfills the desires of those who fear him;
He hears their cry and saves them.
20The LORD watches over all who love Him,
but all the wicked He will destroy. 21My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD.
